What Happens to PBO in the Environment?
PBO degrades rapidly (8.4-hour half-life) in the environment by photolysis in water, and is metabolized by soil microorganisms. Rates of hydrolysis, aerobic and anaerobic aqueous metabolism, are slower. Although little volatilization from soil or water is expected, the estimated atmospheric half-life of PBO is 3.4 hours, based on the estimated reaction rate with hydroxyl radicals. PBO is moderately mobile in soil-water systems (Koc = 399 – 830).
